Spiritual Mentoring Certificate Program
Instructor: Carrie Ives and Beth Cohen
Meetings: 17 Wednesday, Saturday Meetings
Date: September, 2022 until June, 2023. Exact dates will be provided soon.
Time: Times will be provided soon.
Format: TOL Certificate Workshop
Audience: Clergy, mental health workers, members of the helping professions
Description: Spiritual Mentoring offers the opportunity to hold another in a space of love, compassion, and acceptance as they seek to align with their own inner Divinity. A spiritual mentor creates a space in which a mentee will be seen, heard, and guided on their spiritual journey. This profound opportunity to guide another makes the mentoring process a sacred opportunity to sit with another and experience the Divine Beloved within the mentee.

The Spiritual Mentoring Certificate Program is especially designed for those wanting to cultivate the inner presence and skills necessary for offering mentoring to those in need. This program is open to ordained clergy, seminarians in training, as well as to mental health counselors and other helping professionals who may desire to incorporate a spiritual focus into their practice. If you are interested in this program but do not find yourself in one of the above categories, please contact us to discuss your particular situation and, together, we can assess the appropriateness of this program for you.
Goals: At the end of the program, participants will be able to:
  • Define and describe spiritual mentoring
  • Name and explain three basic skills used in spiritual mentoring
  • Demonstrate the use of expressive therapies and spiritual practices for mentoring
  • Describe how mental illness, physical illness, and marginalized identity can impact the spiritual journey
  • Create a vision and plan for their own spiritual mentoring practice
Other:

The class will be structured to be available in dual-mode, allowing participants to be either in-person or online via Zoom.
Fee: $1,800.00

Afternoon supervision group: 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm

This year, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, both supervision and consultation will be conducted online (as of now using the Zoom platform). Registrants may obtain hours in supervision, consultation, or as group observer. Those working towards Recognition as a Pastoral Care Specialist need thirty hours of group supervision and consultation with at least one hour of Individual Supervision with a Written Case Presentation.
Goals: The First Monday training program is an opportunity for persons to both grow in knowledge and train towards recognition in the area of spiritual care and counseling. Usually held on the First Monday of each month, mornings will be a theory seminar and afternoons will be both a consultation and supervision opportunity (the afternoons will be taped). Topics to be included are brief-term, supportive counseling methods, crisis intervention, grief and loss, divorce recovery, pastoral diagnosis, referral, and the application of pastoral care principals in the broader functions of ministry.

Any pastor or lay person in the Indiana Conference is welcomed to participate in this experience. Persons who are not United Methodists from Indiana are welcomed but will be required to register at a higher fee (see registration material below). This program was recognized as a Category 1 Training Center with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and could be used in seeking the Spiritual Care Specialist with AAPC, a national recognition requiring a minimum of fifty contact hours of training and supervision. AAPC has now transitioned into one section of ACPE: the Standard for Spiritual Care and Education. Completion of the Pastoral Care Specialist is through First Monday. Pastoral Care Specialists may apply to APCE for recognition as Practitioners. First Monday is open to those who have already gone through a previous two-year cycle of training and/or who may be already recognized, certified, or licensed.

Dr. P.T. Wilson is the facilitator for these meetings. He is the ordained clergy serving under full-time appointment at Danville United Methodist Church. Licensed in Indiana as both a Mental Health Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist, he is a Clinical Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, the International Association of Group Therapy and Group Process, and a Psychotherapist with ACPE: the Standard for Spiritual Care and Education.
